Connie is an Australian contemporary artist who has exhibited in her Graduate Show for the Master of Contemporary Art program at the Victoria College of Art, University of Melbourne in November 2024.
The 2024 artwork is a series of non-figurative oil paintings that explore Connie’s emotions and memories since she migrated from Hong Kong to Melbourne in 1987. She makes these works reflecting on the traditions of her Chinese background, in particular calligraphic writing, printmaking, painting and drawing. She also composes music for singing and playing piano in the same way.
Paint for Connie becomes a physical material and the colours she chooses reflecting sensory emotional signals. They all come together as the artwork. She sees artmaking as a never-ending curious journey with its process guiding her to experiment with new ideas and concepts, from both eastern and western art history. Her aim is for her brush strokes to become an emotional dance that resonates on the surface of the canvas to engage her viewer’s senses with unpredictable moods and feelings that create a limitless sense of the sublime.
